Sugi Namiki
(Old Highway Trees)
A row of cedar trees that stretches approximately 500 meters from Moto-Hakone to Hakone Town, and is said to have been planted in the early Edo period.
Over 400 cedar trees lined the path, protecting travelers from the summer sun and the cold winter winds.
14:00 Walking in Hakone Hachi-Ri
Stone pavement maintained during the Edo period
The Hakone Old Highway was a road that crossed Hakone during the Edo period, and was a difficult road for travelers at the time.
When it rained, the mud reached up to the shins, making it difficult to walk, so the shogunate replaced it with stone pavement.
15:30 Take a break at the 400-year-old Amazake Chaya
Teahouse established since the early Edo period
The current owner is the 13th generation
This amazake teahouse began its business as a teahouse for lords traveling up and down the Hakone Road to make arrangements and to rest before and after crossing the barrier. While teahouses in the neighborhood closed one after another, only one remains and continues to operate as usual.
Amazake tea house's amazake is made with only "rice malt" and rice. This process has remained unchanged since the Edo period. In summer, "cold amazake" is often added to the menu. It was a summer specialty in the Edo period, partly because it was meant to prevent summer fatigue.
